Below are some short excerpts from essays that I have written on specific topics within my time at Western Colorado University.

  • Aesthetics can mean many different things to people in different fields of thought around the world. Aesthetics are culturally bound principles that allow for people to pass judgement on many different areas of life. In designing the scenic elements for theatrical productions, one must take these principles into account to best portray the show in the most accurate light. Factoring in characteristics such as color, texture, cultural elements, symbols, etc. can help to determine the overall aesthetic picture and impression that one wants the audience to see pertaining to the specific production itself.

  • The United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) is all about connecting people within the theatre community. Whether that be educators, practitioners, or students in the field, USITT’s code of ethics reflects their overall goal in the organization. These ethics are pretty generic being that they have to apply to people all across the nation. These principles generally fall into three categories, based on strictly the work being done, social relations, and information release/disclosure.

  • Conversations are how, as a society, we interact with other people in the world around us. This could be for business or pleasure but the standard stays the same for how it is societally accepted for people to communicate with one another. Even if the relationship between those involved is different the same basis for what is needed to have what we call a good conversation stays the same. This basis of what is said, how it is said, and the context surrounding the conversation all falls into the realm of semiotics.
